About Ashanti Development: | Ashanti Development (AD) is a charity which was set up in 2005, when London-based Ghanaians asked their friends and neighbours for help to improve the lives of people in their home villages. We are looking for healthcare professionals to spend 8 weeks to 6 months in Central Ghana to work as volunteers at Mampong Government Hospital and/or one of the five community clinics we have built and/or sector public health directorates The charity has other work strands including water and sanitation (WASH), education, livelihood support (including farm support and microcredit). If interested in volunteering in these areas please contact us. Mampong Hospital serves 6 local authorities and has 98 beds in the general wing and a further 56 elsewhere including the Maternity wing. There are daily outpatient clinics, with specialist clinics for HIV and Sickle cell, and an emergency department. It is short of staff in all departments and much of the day-to-day care is provided by physician assistants and nurses. Malaria is the most common indication for admission followed by anaemia, pneumonia, diarrhoea, typhoid, hypertension and diabetes. Ashanti Development’s headquarters are in the village of Gyetiase, some 3km distant from Mampong. The village has changed little over the centuries but now has electricity and an internet connection. The community and the AD Ghanaian team of Nicholas, Christobel and Elizabeth welcome volunteers & do all they can to help. The charity will provide volunteers with free board, lodging and laundry. |

From the tiny beginning of setting up a tarpaulin shelter on the pavement each day CRF now has permanent clinics and mobile clinics taking healthcare to the slums where people are unable to travel. About International SOS | We are a medical assistance company working with large organisations and their travelling population (e.g. business travellers, expatriates). One of the main things we do it provide them with advice and recommendations when they are around the globe (for example, anything from providing initial advice before they travel, giving advice and hospital details if they get sick when they are away, monitoring the care they receive and coordinating evacuations/repatriations for them). This is out of one of our Assistance Centres around the globe (the one in the UK being based in London). It’s a great place to work and a really different environment (being in a corporate office etc.). It’s not a clinical environment so you do need to be ready for that but it uses your nursing/medical knowledge in such a different and interesting way. |
