About | Alice Springs Hospital is the major referral hospital for Central Australia, serving a population of more than 42,000 people in an area exceeding a million square kilometres. The hospital has more than 65,000 admissions annually, with almost 84 per cent of patients being Aboriginal, many with conditions rarely seen elsewhere in the country, and high levels of morbidity and mortality. It is a 207-bed facility providing a general range of secondary, and some tertiary, inpatient, outpatient and specialist services. About Ashanti Development: | Ashanti Development (AD) is a charity which was set up in 2005, when London-based Ghanaians asked their friends and neighbours for help to improve the lives of people in their home villages. We are looking for healthcare professionals to spend 8 weeks to 6 months in Central Ghana to work as volunteers at Mampong Government Hospital and/or one of the five community clinics we have built and/or sector public health directorates The charity has other work strands including water and sanitation (WASH), education, livelihood support (including farm support and microcredit). If interested in volunteering in these areas please contact us. Mampong Hospital serves 6 local authorities and has 98 beds in the general wing and a further 56 elsewhere including the Maternity wing. There are daily outpatient clinics, with specialist clinics for HIV and Sickle cell, and an emergency department. It is short of staff in all departments and much of the day-to-day care is provided by physician assistants and nurses. Malaria is the most common indication for admission followed by anaemia, pneumonia, diarrhoea, typhoid, hypertension and diabetes. Ashanti Development’s headquarters are in the village of Gyetiase, some 3km distant from Mampong. The village has changed little over the centuries but now has electricity and an internet connection. The community and the AD Ghanaian team of Nicholas, Christobel and Elizabeth welcome volunteers & do all they can to help. The charity will provide volunteers with free board, lodging and laundry. |

About J-PAL Africa | J-PAL Africa, based at the University of Cape Town, leads J-PAL’s work in sub-Saharan Africa. J-PAL Africa conducts randomized evaluations, builds partnerships for evidence-informed policymaking, and helps partners scale up effective programs. Our research team evaluates the impact of social programs and policies in South Africa, covering a wide range of sectors including labor markets, urban services, and political participation. Our policy team works with organizations and governments across Africa to build, pilot, and scale cost-effective interventions, including the Teaching at the Right Level approach to primary education. Our training team builds researcher capacity to conduct randomized evaluations and policymaker capacity to use evidence from randomized evaluations effectively. |

Qualifications/experience required: | A Master's degree in economics, development, public health or political science. Our Associate level positions require no experience, Senior Associate requires 2 years and Manager requires 4 years. There are more senior positions but the ones listed are the most commonly advertised. |
